Sedalia Rotary Awards Scholarships to High School Students

The Sedalia Rotary Club awarded scholarships to exceptional students from each High-School in Pettis County on May 5th during a lunch time ceremony. Each student received a $500 scholarship. A committee of Rotarians interviewed all of the applicants and chose the winners of this scholarship based on academics, extra curricular activites, community involvement, and interview ability. The following, in order that they appear in the attached photograph, each received the $500.

Each of the above students received Student of the Month recognition by the Sedalia Rotary Club earlier this year. In addition to the $500.00 award, Laura Honn received the Student of the Year scholarship by the Sedalia Rotary Club. This scholarship provides $2,000 over 4 years.

Laurie Sunrise Beach Rotary Coordinates Matching Grant for Computer Lab in Soke, Turkey

District 6080, the Laurie Sunrise Beach Rotary and the Aydin Soke Rotary Club recently joined forces to provide a computer lab for a middle school in Soke, Turkey. This project was in response to a law that was recently enacted in that country increasing the compulsory education to 8 years, thus requiring that all students complete both an elementary and at least a middle school education. This new law resulted in a tremendous increase in financial obligations to fund existing schools and required that new schools be constructed. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Education's budget in Turkey has been unable to meet the needs required by this new law. For that reason, the Laurie Sunrise Beach Rotary and District 6080 stepped in to "lend a hand". The lab, which consists of one server and 32 terminals was funded by a Matching Grant in the amount of $15,800.

Laurie Sunrise Beach Rotary Helps to Save Lives

As a result of a cooperative effort between the Laurie Sunrise Beach Rotary Club, the Mavisehir Rotary Club in Turkey, Rotary District 6080 (central Missouri), District 5650 (southeast Iowa), District 5440 (Wyoming) and a Matching Grant from Rotary International, lives will be saved. $20,000 was contributed to purchase a kidney transport machine that will allow doctors to harvest a kidney from a donor and then transport it to a recipient in another local hospital or in another part of Turkey. In the past, persons in need of a kidney transplant have not been able to receive viable organs due to the lack of ability to transport them from one location to another. By providing this equipment, persons in need of a kidney transplant will now have a much better chance of survival. This is the only such device in all of Turkey.
